About the black flame candle cocktail photo
This recipe for The Black Flame Candle Cocktail was inspired by one of the all time greatest Halloween movies: Hocus Pocus. The concept of this photo came to me in the summer as I was planning my fall content and after watching the movie early in October, my vision became even more clear. Executing this photo was scary because this is really the first dark and moody photo I have ever taken and it’s probably my most prepped for shoot so far.
About the black flame candle cocktail recipe
Sometimes the horse comes before the cart and in the case of the black flame candle cocktail, the vision for the photo came before the decision of what drink to make. Originally, I was going to develop my own recipe for a drink that involved Empress Gin (the instagrammable purple gin made with butterfly pea flowers), but I quickly realized I needed more experience in cocktail making to achieve a drink that both looked the purple hue I was going for and tasted good. The other catch was that it needed to be a drink that was served in a coupe glass like the one you see in the photo. There were lots of requirements and not much wiggle room.
I was in the liquor store for a good 20 minutes checking out all of the purple hued liquors and researching classic drinks on my phone before someone finally asked me if I needed help finding something. I don’t know that anyone had ever spent that much time anxiously poring over liqueur aisle, and I’m positive they thought something must be wrong with me.
I had the chance to explain what I was looking for and I was really hoping to get some mixology advice, but it turns out just because you work at a liquor store, doesn’t mean you know anything about mixing drinks, lol.
Since my specialties are cooking and baking, I decided that I would leave the mixology to the experts and my new research criteria would be for a clear drink that I could add muddled blackberries to and then add some butterfly pea flower powder to really pop the color. I quite literally googled “clear drink served in coupe glass” and went from there.
Here is what I kept coming across: the classic daiquiri
Though they are mostly all the same, I ended up going with the recipe found here, and I’m so glad I did. I added my own spin in the form of muddled blackberries to make a it a blackberry daquiri. I love the sweetness that the blackberries bring in to balance the lime, rum, and simple syrup. I don’t typically love the taste of a lot of cocktails, but this drink is very smooth, sweet, and most importantly FUN.
What kind of rum should I use in the black flame candle cocktail?
You can use whatever light rum you would like, but remember because there are so few ingredients in The Black Flame Candle Cocktail that the quality of ingredient you choose will affect the overall outcome of the drink. For reference, I used Bacardi rum and it tasted delicious.

Do I have to use fresh lime juice in the black flame candle cocktail?
It is my highest recommendation to use freshly juiced limes in this drink. Each single drink is about the juice of one whole lime. Some limes are a little more or less juicy, so just measure it out as stated in the recipe and you’ll be golden.
Where can I purchase butterfly pea tea powder?
I purchased my butterfly pea tea powder from Suncore foods (available on amazon). Suncore foods is a women owned company and they are genuinely the sweetest people to interact with on social media. I am not being paid by them and this is not sponsored in any way. I just genuinely love this company, and the quality of their superfood color powders and mixes are great.
